Easy How to Draw an Ant Tutorial and Ant Coloring Page
Learning how to draw an ant gets easy when you start with a step by step tutorial. And there’s no better way to learn the names of all those body parts.
Ant Drawing
Ants are intelligent and social insects that work together in communities and communicate in order to solve problems. Their colonies can range from a few dozen in a small, naturally formed area to millions in a large, organized system.
The ant is also one of the world’s strongest creatures in relation to its size. It can carry 50 times its own body weight! And if they work together, then can even move bigger objects as a group.
This ant tutorial will show students how to draw an ant with its basic body parts – head, thorax and abdomen — with just enough extra detail to make one look pretty realistic. It could be turned into a kind of cartoon ant by getting creative with the eyes and head OR it could work for a science project too. There’s plenty of room for labels on the side, if that would be helpful.
Getting Started with Drawing Guides
You may have noticed that all of the tutorials on this site have a dashed guideline running through the center of each step, both in the horizontal and vertical direction. If students make their own centered lines on their own paper, before drawing, they will have an easy reference to follow.
For instance, as seen in Step 1 below, the oval abdomen needs to be sitting on the vertical line, and centered in the bottom panel. It’s important to sketch that shape big enough and high enough on the sheet of paper so that there’s room for the head and tail underneath. When beginners get their drawing off to a good start, there’s a better chance of them feeling successful by the time they are done.
So does that mean students need to get out a ruler to draw a big fat line down the center of their paper before they start? Goodness no, please don’t! That will most likely be hard to erase and distract from any finished art. No, simply fold the sheet of paper in half both ways, make a crease, and unfold. The beauty is that by the time the drawing is done and colored in, the creases will disappear.
And now, on to the Ant drawing project.
