Juneteenth Drawing
Juneteenth marks an important day in our nation’s history, and it does come with some imagery that is very symbolic of what it stands for. As the official day of emancipation for slaves, a broken chain kind of says it all.
This Juneteenth art project focuses on how to draw large simple chain links, and the overlapping needed to make them look like they are hooked together. The step by step tutorial explains exactly which lines to draw, and which ones to erase.
A drawing like this is also the perfect time for a little shading practice. This may look like a charcoal project, but a simple No. 2 pencil actually does the job even better. It’s not messy, and lets young artists practice making different values without getting their hands all super messy. Real charcoal is great for large scale shading, but this smaller, more precise drawing is not the time. All you need is one of those pencils that can make dark lines, I recommend the Ticonderoga brand.
Please note that there is a template included in the download that has the JUNETEENTH letters already added. It will let students focus on just their chain drawing, and not get too sidetracked with making the most perfect letters. Plus, tracing and shading them makes for some good practice too.

Materials for a Juneteenth drawing

- Drawing Paper. Don’t substitute it with copy paper or construction paper. The surface will get fuzzy, erasing might cause holes, and the colors will generally not look as bright.
- Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase.
- Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tips. Stabilo Markers. They have the best colors, the best tips, and last the longest.
Step by Step Directions for a Juneteenth Drawing
Time needed: 45 minutes
Make a Juneteenth Drawing
- Print the template page. Draw a large chain shape going off the page.
- Add a link that overlaps it.
- Erase the gray lines. Draw part of the broken chain that overlaps.
- Erase the gray line. Draw part of a broken chain below.
- Add an overlapping side of a chain.
- Draw another chain link behind it.
- Trace the letters with a pencil.
- Fill in all the letters with a shade of gray pencil.
- Go back and make the chain edges darker so they look more dimensional.
