Acorn Crayon Drawing

A drawing of an acorn, made with the help of an easy step by step tutorial.

These little seeds might be one of the simplest symbols of fall, but when students learn how to draw an acorn and make it BIG, they can really zone in on some of the small details. Those tiny little shapes in the cap, for instance, would be much more difficult to do if they were drawn actual size.

Drawing from real life is helpful for older students, but younger ones sometimes need a little help in seeing patterns that they can replicate themselves. This acorn cap may seem to be made up of a random collection of overlapping V shapes, but there is order to them. The ones on top are a bit larger, and then they get a bit smaller as they go down. If students follow the plan shown on the step by step tutorial, it will walk them through an easy process of creating the look themselves.

Materials to Draw an Acorn

  • Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
  • Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.
  • Black Sharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
  • Colored Pencils, Skin Color. If your budget allows for some really good colored pencils that lay down lots of soft color, without breaking all the time — this brand is amazing. In this case, the skin color collection is obviously very useful for drawing people, but also drawing things found in nature. On the plus side, they need to be sharpened by hand and won’t even fit in most classroom electric sharpeners. If you know, you know.
  • Colored Pencils, Assorted colors. Again, this brand wins with their sturdy size and bright colors. Drawings made with pencil crayons don’t have to have a kind of thin look to them. They may not be an option for every classroom budget, but they could be an option for special occasions, or for the art enthusiast at home.

  1. Thank you Michael, I do have books with a collection of simple how to draws, but do you mean an ebook with more sketching like this?

  2. Please please do an e-book! I have bought books, courses and still trying one now which is so long winded and does not really make you feel like you are making progress at all. The girls really want to sketch properly, and there is nothing out there really that is not pompous really! This acorn is fabulous exactly what they need thank you!
