Flame Drawing
If drawing solid shapes is tricky enough, then learning how to draw flames that are moving and kind of transparent and filled with millions of colors is on another plane entirely. Not to worry, the pros can go after painting the super realistic stuff, and maybe make a career out of it, but there’s plenty that the beginner can do to up their flame skills too.
Most everyone starts out drawing a flame on a candle as a kind of tear drop shape that is filled with an orangish color. That’s a great place to start, and certainly looks pretty close to the real thing, but it’s not that hard to add just a little bit more complexity.
For instance, students might start to see that the center of the flame is often a different color than the outside edge, and the overall fire isn’t always just one smooth shape. Well, then it might be a fun time to try something like this tutorial. It will walk students through drawing some layered fire shapes, which could then of course be filled with several shades of hot colors.
The good news is that just the idea of making more curvy tipped edges will help, along with using three hot colors instead of just one. If students just try that out, along with some simple logs for a campfire look, their fire drawing is likely to have much more complexity than it ever had before.

Materials to draw a Flame
- Drawing Paper. This is the good stuff you can buy in bulk for a good price.
- Pencils. I like how this brand always makes nice dark lines.
- Black Marker. A permanent marker will give you a dark black color.
- Crayons. The larger packs are nice for more color choices.

Time needed: 45 minutes
How to Draw a Flame
- Draw a small flame shape like the one shown.
Anything close is fine.
- Add another flame shape above and around the first.
- Draw another flame shape above and around the second.
- Add small flame shapes where space allows.
- Draw a middle log under the fire.
- Add two more logs on either side.
- Draw two more logs on either side.
- Add texture lines to the logs.
- Trace with a marker and color.
