Learning how to draw a sunflower doesn’t mean that you have to have just one centered in the middle of the paper, all by itself. That doesn’t make for a very exciting composition. You might want to consider Vincent Van Gogh, who I think made about 17 different versions of his sunflower paintings, all with different arrangements. Instead of arranging them in a vase though, students can experiment with their own layout by balancing a simple large, medium and small one. And if some of them are so large that they go off the page a bit, that makes things look even a little more lifelike too!

Materials to draw a Sunflower
- Drawing Paper. This is the good stuff you can buy in bulk for a good price.
- Pencils. I like how this brand always makes nice dark lines.
- Black Marker. A permanent marker will give you a dark black color.
- Crayons. The larger packs are nice for more color choices.

Step by Step Directions for a Sunflower Drawing
Time needed: 1 hour
Draw a Sunflower
- Start the center of a large flower.
- Add a row of petals around it.
- Add tips of more petals.
- Draw the stem and leaves.
- Start center of medium flower.
- Add a row of petals around it.
- Draw leaf, start small flower.
- Add more petals.
- Trace with marker and color.
What? No “introduction to Fibonacci Spirals”. LOL.
