Picasso and Drawing
This Picasso art project began as an oil pastel project years ago, and did lend itself well to the painterly qualities that pastels sometimes have. I decided to share this new version though, created just with crayons to show how pressing hard can still create some rich colors. The sample art above was actually made by layering crayons on the large face shapes. It makes for some interesting colors and texture.
If you’d like your students to remember that cubism is about seeing more than one side of something at a time, then I don’t know a more literal way to interpret that than a front and profile view of a face, smooshed together. You can’t help but make some interesting instant abstract art.
Pablo Picasso was a Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and theatre designer who played a huge role in the art world in the early 1900s. His creating and experimenting helped him to become one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art. If there is only limited time for art history lessons for your elementary students, a Picasso art project will always be a smart way to go.

Why Draw with Guides?
You may have noticed that all of the tutorials on this website have a dashed vertical line and horizontal line running through the center of each step. If students make their own centered lines on their own paper, before drawing, they will have an easy reference to follow. All they need to do is fold their sheet of paper in half both ways, make a crease, and unfold. The best part is, by the time the drawing is done and colored in, the creases will have disappeared!
